Method and Music

My previous post on measuring technique inspired the following thoughts.

  • Technique is the method by which we create something
  • You can’t create music without a method
  • The more difficult it is to replicate, the more complex an artist’s method.
  • A complex method doesn’t necessarily create meaningful music.
  • Replicating an artist’s method isn’t always desirable.
  • Artists who are good at replicating other artists’ methods have (almost) equal technique.
  • Artists with complex methods aren’t necessarily good at replicating other artists’ methods.
  • Artists with poor technique can’t fully replicate or realize their concept.
  • Artists with good technique can consistently replicate or realize their concept.
  • Listeners find varying levels of meaning in method and music…deal with it!!
